Teeth whitening is the treatment people almost whisper the question about — as if wanting a brighter smile needs some sort of justification. It really doesn’t. And here’s the honest answer up front: it’s the most affordable cosmetic treatment we offer, and one of the most satisfying. So let’s skip the vagueness and talk real numbers.
It’s also one of the simplest. There’s no drilling, nothing permanent, and nothing removed from your teeth — whitening simply lifts years of staining back out of the enamel. For a lot of people who think they need veneers, a fortnight of whitening turns out to be all they were really after. That’s exactly why we’d rather you understood the cost (and the limits) before committing to anything bigger.
How much does teeth whitening cost in Dublin?
Professional custom-tray home teeth whitening in Dublin costs €350 at Docklands Dental — a complete kit with custom-made trays and professional-grade gel that you keep and can top up for years to come.
That’s it. One price, no surprises. The €350 isn’t a deposit or a “from” figure that quietly climbs at the desk — it’s the cost of the whole thing. We’ve put it on our price list alongside everything else, because we genuinely believe you should be able to see what something costs before you ever walk through the door.
Why do we only offer home whitening (and not the in-chair laser)?
We deliberately don’t do in-chair “laser” whitening — for the same €350, custom-tray home whitening worn over about two weeks gives more predictable results and far less sensitivity for our Dublin patients.
Look, we know the blue-light, one-hour, walk-out-dazzling version sounds appealing. But those lights are close to useless (the science just isn’t there), and blasting your teeth for an hour is a reliable way to make them ache. What we actually want is a really good result with minimal sensitivity — and the ability to re-whiten whenever you fancy. Custom trays and professional gel, worn gently at home, do exactly that. You’ll usually see a difference within the first few days.
What does the €350 actually include?
The €350 covers the whole process at our Dublin practice — a health check, impressions, custom-made trays built to fit your mouth precisely, your professional-grade whitening gel, and clear instructions. No hidden add-ons.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- A proper check first. We only ever whiten healthy teeth, so we make sure there’s no decay, no cracks and no gum trouble before we start.
- Custom trays, made for you. Not the floppy one-size-fits-nobody trays from a shop — precise trays that hold the gel against the tooth and keep it off your gums.
- Professional-grade gel. A peroxide-based gel that lifts staining from within the tooth rather than scrubbing anything off the surface.
- Trays you keep. They last for years, which is what makes top-ups so cheap (more on that below).
One quick note: we’ll usually send you to our hygienist for a clean first — that’s a separate €95, and the next section explains why it’s worth it.
Should you get your teeth cleaned before whitening?
Yes — at Docklands Dental in Dublin we usually book a €95 hygiene appointment before whitening, because gel lifts stain from within the enamel, not from plaque or tartar sitting on top of it.
Whitening gel and surface deposits don’t mix. Plaque, tartar and the brown film from tea, coffee and red wine sit on the tooth; whitening works inside it. Whiten over the top of that and you get a patchy result, gel wasted on deposits a hygienist would have lifted, and a harder time judging how many shades you’ve actually gained. A clean first also gives us a proper look at your gums before any gel goes near them.
Here, that clean is a hygiene appointment in one of our three dedicated hygiene suites, where our hygienists use a biofilm-first protocol on EMS AIRFLOW units — warm water, air and a fine powder that lift staining and plaque gently, with instruments only where hardened tartar remains. We’ve written a full guide to biofilm therapy with EMS AIRFLOW in Dublin if you want the detail. Some people find the clean alone brightens them more than they expected — surface stain was most of what they were seeing — and decide whitening can wait. That’s a perfectly good outcome, and we’ll tell you if it’s likely before you buy a kit.
In money terms: a hygiene appointment is €95 and the whitening kit is €350, so having your teeth cleaned and whitened here comes to €445 in total. If you already see our hygienists regularly, tell us when your last visit was and we’ll let you know whether another is needed first.
How does whitening compare to bonding or veneers in Dublin?
At €350, whitening is comfortably the most affordable cosmetic option in Dublin — set that against composite veneers at €450 per tooth, or hand-layered feldspathic veneers at €1,200 per tooth, and the value speaks for itself.
It’s worth being clear about what whitening can and can’t do, though, because it’s not interchangeable with bonding or veneers. Whitening brightens your natural teeth back toward their best shade. It won’t change the shape of a tooth, close a gap, or alter the colour of existing crowns, veneers or white fillings (those stay the shade they were made). If your teeth are healthy and just a bit dulled by years of coffee and red wine, whitening is often all you need. If you’re after a change in shape or alignment, that’s a different conversation — and we’ve laid the full picture out in our guide to cosmetic dentistry costs in Dublin and our honest comparison of composite bonding versus teeth whitening.
Why is shop-bought whitening so much cheaper — and is it worth it?
Over-the-counter whitening kits and strips tend to cost €20–€50 in Dublin pharmacies, but by law they contain far less active ingredient than professional gel, so results are slower, patchier and rarely last.
We’re always straight with people on this one. The cheaper price is real, but so is the trade-off: weaker gel, trays that don’t fit, and gum irritation when the gel leaks where it shouldn’t. They can nudge surface staining a little. They won’t give you the even, lasting result a professional kit will. If you’re going to spend time whitening your teeth, it’s worth doing it once, properly — and if your staining is mostly from tea or coffee, our piece on removing tea stains from teeth is a good place to start.
How long do the results last, and what do top-ups cost?
Whitening results typically last 6 to 12 months before a top-up is wanted, and because you keep your custom trays, a top-up just means a little more gel — not paying the €350 again.
This is the bit we genuinely love about home whitening: it isn’t a one-and-done treatment, it’s something you can maintain for years. Big coffee or red-wine drinker? The staining will creep back a touch sooner — that’s just life. But a night or two of top-up gel every six to twelve months keeps things bright, and the gel itself is a fraction of the kit price. You’re not starting from scratch each time.
Is professional teeth whitening safe?
Professionally supervised whitening is one of the safest cosmetic dental treatments there is, and its most common side effect — mild, temporary tooth sensitivity — usually settles within a day or two of finishing in our Dublin patients.
The research backs this up. A widely cited review in the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice (Carey, 2014) concluded that peroxide-based whitening delivered in custom trays is among the most studied and well-established cosmetic treatments in dentistry, with transient sensitivity being the main side effect. That matches exactly what we see day to day — and if you already have sensitive teeth, just tell us. We can dial down the gel concentration or shorten the wear time so it stays comfortable. Whitening is, after all, lifting staining from within the enamel, not stripping anything away.

Frequently asked questions
Is home whitening better than in-chair whitening?
For most people, yes. Custom-tray home whitening worn over about two weeks gives more predictable results and far less sensitivity than in-chair ‘laser’ whitening, for the same €350.
Should I get my teeth cleaned before whitening?
Usually, yes. A €95 hygiene appointment first lets the gel work on clean enamel rather than on plaque or surface stain — we explain why above.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Results typically last 6 to 12 months. Because you keep your custom trays, maintaining your smile just means buying a little more gel for a top-up rather than paying for a whole new kit.
