One of the most common things people say when they first sit down with us is: “I’ve seen the before-and-after photos online, but I want to know what’s actually realistic for me.” It’s a fair question. The internet is full of jaw-dropping veneer transformations, and it’s natural to wonder how much of that is achievable in real life — and how much is clever photography and filters.
So here’s the honest answer. Porcelain veneers genuinely produce some of the most dramatic, lasting cosmetic transformations in dentistry. But the results look different on every patient, and what makes a great outcome isn’t just the porcelain — it’s the planning, the communication, and understanding exactly what you’re starting with.
Let’s walk through what real results actually look like, and what to expect at every stage.
What Does a Porcelain Veneer Smile Transformation Actually Look Like?
Porcelain veneer smile transformations in Dublin typically involve 6–8 veneers across the front teeth, completed over 2–3 appointments, with results that are immediately visible the moment the final veneers are bonded in place.
The change is immediate and striking — there’s no waiting for swelling to go down or for the result to “settle.” When we bond the final veneers in place and you look in the mirror for the first time, that’s it. That’s the result.
What changes most noticeably depends on your starting point:
- Colour: Veneers can achieve shades of white that teeth whitening simply can’t reach — particularly for teeth that are intrinsically discoloured (tetracycline staining, fluorosis, naturally grey or yellow enamel)
- Shape: Short, worn, chipped, or uneven teeth become uniform and proportional. We can lengthen, widen, or reshape as needed
- Alignment: Mild crowding or spacing can be visually corrected without braces — veneers can close gaps and make teeth appear straighter
- Texture: Porcelain has a translucency and surface quality that looks remarkably like natural enamel — and in good light, it can be genuinely indistinguishable
The number of veneers matters too. A single veneer on a chipped tooth looks different from a full smile redesign. Most people we see for cosmetic smile work have 6 to 8 veneers placed — covering everything that shows when you smile. Some patients go to 10 or even 12, depending on how wide their smile is and how much shows.
What Kinds of Problems Do Veneers Fix Most Successfully?
Porcelain veneers in Dublin are most effective for severe discolouration, chips and cracks, gaps between teeth, worn edges, and mild crowding — cases where the underlying teeth are healthy but the appearance needs significant correction.
We see a lot of variation in what brings people through our door at Grand Canal Dock. Here are the situations where porcelain veneers consistently deliver outstanding results:
Tetracycline staining and deep discolouration. This is where veneers really shine. If you were given tetracycline antibiotics as a child, you’ll know the frustration — the dark banding through your teeth doesn’t respond to whitening at all. Veneers are one of the few reliable solutions. The result can be transformative.
Worn, flattened edges. Teeth naturally wear down over decades, but some people grind significantly, leaving them with short, flat, square-looking teeth by their 30s or 40s. Veneers restore the length and shape that was lost — and the before-and-after difference is remarkable.
Chipped or uneven teeth. A single prominent chip can draw the eye every time you smile. Veneers correct this precisely, matching the adjacent teeth in colour and form.
Gaps and mild spacing. Compared to composite bonding, porcelain veneers handle larger gaps more predictably, and the result holds its shape and colour over decades rather than years.
The situations where we’d steer you toward a different solution: if your teeth are already well-shaped and just need brightening, teeth whitening is simpler and less invasive. And if the issue is purely cosmetic with healthy, well-sized teeth, composite bonding may be worth exploring first. We’ll always talk you through the options honestly.
What Happens at Each Stage of the Process?
The porcelain veneer process at our Dublin 2 practice involves three appointments — consultation and smile design, tooth preparation with temporary veneers, and final bonding — typically spread over 2–4 weeks from start to finish.
Here’s what each stage actually involves:
Appointment 1: Consultation and smile design. This is where we do all the planning. We’ll look at your teeth, discuss what you want to change, and — this is the part we really love — use digital smile design to show you a preview of the proposed result. You’ll see a visualisation of the planned veneers before we touch your teeth. Your smile, your plan. We won’t start until you’re happy with the direction.
Appointment 2: Preparation and temporaries. To place porcelain veneers, we remove a very thin layer of enamel from the front of each tooth — typically 0.5mm, roughly the thickness of a contact lens. This creates space for the veneer to sit flush and natural-looking. Impressions (or a digital scan) are taken and sent to the ceramics lab. In the meantime, you leave with temporary veneers in place, so you’re never without a smile. The lab work typically takes 1–2 weeks.
Appointment 3: Final bonding. The handcrafted porcelain veneers arrive from the lab. We try them in, check the fit and colour, make any minor adjustments, and bond them permanently. This is the appointment that produces the “after” photo. The entire final fitting typically takes 2–3 hours for a full set.
One thing patients often comment on: how different the temporaries look from the finals. Temporaries are functional placeholders — the real veneers, made by skilled ceramists from high-quality porcelain, have a depth and translucency that temporaries simply can’t replicate. If you’re slightly uncertain during the temporary phase, try to reserve your judgement for the finals.
How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Actually Last?
Porcelain veneers bonded to healthy enamel have achieved clinical survival rates above 90% at both 15 and 20 years — making them one of the most durable cosmetic dental treatments available in Dublin or anywhere else.
The research backs this up. A systematic review published in the European Journal of Dentistry found that porcelain veneers bonded to enamel showed survival rates above 90% at 15 and 20 years in long-term studies. We genuinely consider well-placed porcelain veneers a 15–20 year investment — and for many patients, significantly longer.
What affects longevity:
- Grinding and clenching. This is the biggest risk factor. Ceramic fracture is the most common reason veneers need early replacement, and most fractures in grinders are preventable with a night guard
- Bonding to enamel vs dentine. Veneers bonded entirely to enamel have the strongest long-term adhesion — which is one reason we take a conservative prep approach
- Oral hygiene. Veneers don’t decay, but the teeth underneath them do. Good brushing and flossing protect the margins and keep everything intact long-term
The honest picture: a small number of veneers will need replacement before 15 years. Most won’t. And unlike some cosmetic treatments, a veneer that chips or debonds can often be repaired rather than fully replaced.

What Do Porcelain Veneers Cost in Dublin?
Porcelain veneers in Dublin cost €1,200 per tooth — a full smile of 6 veneers at Docklands Dental represents a total investment of around €7,200, with payment plans available to spread the cost over time.
Look, we know it’s a significant investment. We don’t pretend otherwise. Here’s how we think about the value:
At €1,200 per veneer with an expected lifespan of 15–20 years, you’re looking at roughly €60–€80 per tooth per year for a result that you see every day. Compared to treatments that need regular replacement or annual top-ups, the long-term equation is actually quite reasonable.
Composite bonding is less expensive upfront — from around €250–€450 per tooth at our practice — but needs replacing over a shorter timescale. For some patients, bonding is absolutely the right choice. For others, particularly where the cosmetic change is significant or longevity really matters, porcelain is the stronger long-term investment.
We’ll always give you a clear cost breakdown for your specific case before you commit to anything. No pressure, no hard sell — just a conversation about what makes sense for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do porcelain veneers look natural?
Yes — high-quality porcelain has a translucency and surface texture that closely mimics natural enamel. In good light, well-made veneers are often indistinguishable from natural teeth. The result depends on the skill of the ceramist and the dentist’s approach to shade matching and smile design.
How many veneers do I need for a full smile makeover?
Most patients have 6 to 8 veneers placed across the upper front teeth for a full smile transformation. Some patients extend to 10 or 12, depending on how wide their smile is. The right number depends on your specific smile width and what shows when you smile naturally.
