Are Dental Implants Really Worth the Investment?
We hear this question almost every day. And honestly? We get it. Dental implants aren’t cheap, and when you’re weighing up your options, it’s completely natural to wonder if they’re worth the money.
Here’s our honest answer: for most patients, dental implants are the single best investment they can make in their oral health. But “most” isn’t “all” — and we’d never push someone towards implants if another option made more sense for them.
Let us walk you through what makes implants different, what our patients actually experience, and help you decide if they’re the right choice for you.
What Makes Dental Implants Different?
A dental implant is the only tooth replacement that actually replaces the root. That might sound like a small detail, but it changes everything:
- It preserves your jawbone. When you lose a tooth, the bone underneath starts to shrink. An implant stimulates the bone just like a natural root, keeping it healthy and strong
- It doesn’t touch your other teeth. Unlike a bridge (which requires grinding down the teeth either side), an implant stands completely on its own
- It feels like a real tooth. Once it’s healed, you genuinely forget it’s there. You eat, talk, and smile without thinking about it
- It’s built to last. With proper care, a dental implant can last 20 years or more
The Long-Term Value: Implants vs Alternatives
Let’s talk numbers, because this is where it gets interesting.
A single dental implant at Docklands Dental costs between €3,000 and €3,500. A three-unit conventional bridge costs €2,685 (€895 per unit). So the bridge looks cheaper, right?
But here’s what happens over time:
- A bridge typically lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement. That’s 2-3 bridges over 30 years
- Each replacement requires more work on the supporting teeth, which can weaken them over time
- A denture needs replacing every 5-7 years and often needs adjustments in between
- Meanwhile, your implant is just… there. Doing its thing. Year after year
When you add it all up, implants frequently work out as the most cost-effective option over your lifetime. Not to mention the comfort difference — there’s no comparison.
What Our Patients Tell Us
We’ve placed hundreds of implants at our Dublin clinic, and the feedback we get consistently comes back to a few themes:
“I Wish I’d Done It Sooner”
This is far and away the most common thing patients tell us. Many people put off getting an implant for years — living with a gap, struggling with a denture, or just dealing with the discomfort. Once it’s done, the most common reaction is genuine surprise at how straightforward it was and frustration that they waited so long.
“I Forgot It’s Not My Real Tooth”
That’s exactly what we’re going for. A well-placed implant with a quality porcelain crown should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth — both visually and functionally. Biting into an apple, eating a steak, smiling in photos. It just works.
“The Process Was Easier Than I Expected”
Look, we won’t pretend it’s a walk in the park. Implant placement is oral surgery, and for our patients it is carried out at ISCD (the Institute of Specialist and Cosmetic Dentistry) by specialist oral surgeon Dr Marie O’Neill, with the crown made and fitted here afterwards. But most patients tell us it was significantly less uncomfortable than they expected. Many describe it as easier than having a tooth extracted. We use local anaesthesia (and sedation if you’d prefer), and the recovery is typically managed with over-the-counter painkillers for a few days.
When Implants Might NOT Be Worth It
We promised you honesty, so here it is. Dental implants aren’t the right choice for everyone:
- If you’re replacing many teeth: Full arch solutions like All-on-4 are brilliant, but if budget is tight, a well-made denture can be a perfectly acceptable solution
- If you have significant bone loss: Sometimes a bone graft is needed first, which adds time and cost. We’ll always let you know upfront
- If you have uncontrolled health conditions: Conditions like unmanaged diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing. We’ll discuss this openly at your consultation
- If you’re looking for the cheapest option: If cost is the primary concern, a bridge or denture will always have a lower upfront price
The key word there is “upfront.” We always encourage patients to think about the 10, 20, 30-year picture.
The Implant Process at Docklands Dental
Here’s what the journey looks like with us:
- Consultation and 3D scan: We assess your mouth, take a detailed CT scan, and give you a clear treatment plan with exact pricing
- Implant placement: The titanium implant is placed into your jawbone. This takes about 30-60 minutes per implant
- Healing period: 3-6 months for the implant to fuse with your bone (osseointegration). You won’t have a gap — we can provide a temporary solution during this time
- Final crown: Once healed, we attach your custom-made porcelain crown. This is the exciting bit — the moment you see your new smile
Total time from start to finish: typically 4-6 months. Yes, it’s a commitment. But it’s a commitment that pays off for decades.
Can I Afford Dental Implants?
We offer flexible payment plans to make implants accessible. You can spread the cost into manageable monthly payments — and many patients are surprised at how affordable it becomes.
Implant treatment can also qualify for medical expenses tax relief at the standard rate of 20%, which brings the effective cost down further. We complete a Form Med 2 for you at the end of treatment — that is your receipt, not the claim form — and you make the claim itself through Revenue’s myAccount.
Check our price list for current rates, or get in touch to discuss your specific situation. We’ll give you an exact quote — not a vague estimate — so you can make an informed decision.
The Bottom Line
Are dental implants worth it? For most people, absolutely yes. They’re the closest thing to getting your natural tooth back, they last longer than any alternative, and they protect your long-term oral health in ways that bridges and dentures simply can’t.
But we’d never want you to just take our word for it. Come in for a consultation, ask us the hard questions, and we’ll give you straight answers. No pressure, no sales pitch — just the information you need to make the right decision for you.

Frequently asked questions
Are dental implants worth the cost?
For most patients, dental implants are the best long-term investment in oral health. While more expensive upfront than bridges or dentures, they typically last 20 years or more, making them the most cost-effective option over time. They also preserve jawbone health and don’t affect neighbouring teeth.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper care, dental implants can last 20 years or more with proper care. The crown on top may need replacing after 15-20 years due to normal wear, but the implant itself typically remains permanently fused to the jawbone.
Is getting a dental implant painful?
Most patients report that implant placement is less uncomfortable than they expected, often describing it as easier than a tooth extraction. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, with sedation available if preferred. Recovery typically requires only over-the-counter painkillers for a few days.
How long does the dental implant process take?
The full dental implant process typically takes 4-6 months from consultation to final crown. This includes implant placement, a 3-6 month healing period for osseointegration, and fitting the final porcelain crown. A temporary solution is provided during the healing period.
