FAQ

Health and Safety Standards

X-Ray Safety Policy
Patients do have fears when it comes to the use of x-rays in the provision of cosmetic or restorative dentistry. Although it may sound dangerous, with modern technology, the radiation dosage associated with modern X-rays is very small. In day to day life, a person will now absorb more radiation sitting in front of TV for a year or on a flight than through a digital dental X-ray. This is through the use of digital X-ray plates and digital processing which reduces the radiation dosage by up to 90%. The images are also enhanced by specialised software for improved clinical effectiveness and stored on digital database for ease of communication with our patients.

X-rays are an important part of the diagnostic process, they are used to diagnose dental diseases and important part of a patient understanding their oral health. At Docklands Dental, we will only use X-rays with the permission of our patients and only in cases where we feel there is clinically relevant reason for their necessity.

If you have any questions or concerns about dental X-rays, please ask. We are here to help!

Dental Sterilisation / Infection Control
We are one of the few new practices in Ireland that have built a dedicated sterilisation room to ensure the highest standard of patient safety in accordance with future guidelines and the best practice in the UK. This involves a flow of instruments through a process of cleaning a sterilisation. All of our staff continuously update their training to ensure best practice for patient safety. Your safety is our top priority and we would be delighted to show any patients our safety procedures on a practice tour.

One of the main contamination sources can be water. In our filtering process, 99.9% pure water is created through a self-contained water system, this is then used in all patient applications for safety.

All instruments connected to the water system that touch patients are heat-sterilised after each use in a process called autoclaving. These item are routinely checked and dated to ensure optimum safety and items that are not able to be heat-sterilised are deemed to be single use and disposed of. A new item is then used for each new patient.

Time Frame

As we discuss your options, we will do our best to work with you in completing your case accordance with your requested time frames. For some, that means doing a lot of treatment at once and over a short period of time. For others, it may be best to divide the treatment into several phases over several months. These option will be discussed with our patients at the treatment planning phase.

Some procedures can be completed in one visit, while others are more complex and must be planned to allow ample time for design and development by our laboratories in Ireland. By investing in a CEREC 3-D Scanner and milling machine, it now means that advanced dental procedure that used to take weeks can now all be provided in a single session.

In order to determine the best way to meet your goals, we will need to thoroughly evaluate every aspect of your dental health. At your first visit, we will spend time talking with you to discover what your goals are for your teeth. We will then gather diagnostic information such as x-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth, and complete a comprehensive oral exam. With this information, our dentists will be able to carefully study not only the cosmetic aspects of your smile, but also the bite, function, and health of your teeth and gums.

After compiling all this data, we will invite you to discuss with us the options available to you in attaining the smile you want.

Conscious Sedation is a safe and effective method for nervous patients. It induces you into a state of relaxation resulting in amnesia so its likely that you will have no or little memory of the procedure. You might be a Candidate for Sedation dentistry if you have…

  • Fear of dental treatment
  • History of traumatic dental experiences
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Very sensitive gag reflex or difficulty opening
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Limited time to get your dental care completed
  • Complex dental problems; or a need for oral surgery
  • Embarrassment about your teeth
  • If you have a very low pain threshold
  • Experience sweaty palms or find yourself gripping the armrests
  • If you hate the noises, smells and tastes associated with dental care and offices

Sedation Techniques
With safe and proven techniques, dental patients receive an intravenous sedative which works rapidly to create a relaxed state that is maintained and monitored throughout treatment. Beyond creating an optimal environment for you, sedation dentistry also allows the dental surgeon to complete multiple procedures in one appointment. With sedation you simply won’t remember or be aware of any of the dental procedures that are performed. It is like sleeping through your appointment!

Here are some sedation facts:

  • It really works you really can relax through your dental appointment
  • You will have little or no memory of the experience
  • You won’t remember any sounds or smells
  • Complex dental treatments that often require multiple appointments can often be done in as little as one or two appointments, all while you relax!
  • People who have difficulty getting numb will have no problem when relaxed
  • Sedation dentistry is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits
